My life’s journey as a newly wedded bride brought with it not only beautiful surprises and lots of challenges too. The demand of the family to have a bride who will be a ‘homemaker’ presented me with an opportunity to explore my ‘creative’ side that set me on my journey. To be honest, I did not have a clear picture of what I wanted to be, but with the support and advice from my family, I put my knowledge of Fashion Designing into creating ‘Designer Bags and Purses’.
Once I had a good hold, I realized my potential and started venturing out to make bags, covers, folders and accessories. It started out with gifting few items which earned good appreciation. Later the real boost came in when I ‘bagged’ a bulk order and from there, there was no looking back!
To begin with, I managed on my own without any assistance, but when the demand started rising, I started appointing ladies to help out with the business and also learned the nuances of running a successful business.
My team comprises six ladies, mostly below the poverty line, but with the zest of overcoming the worst, providing me with an opportunity to impart basic knowledge of the business and also to make them self-sufficient. Along the way, these ladies, with their zeal and expertise, branch out to become ‘Homeprenuers’. Yes, it does bring in a bit of void which tends to put pressure on other team members, but when I see these ladies being able to provide for their family, it gives me a sense of satisfaction and confidence that I could bring about a difference in the life of one person.
During festivals, the rush of orders keeps me on my toes, but with the support of my family, I am able to bring out the best. The appreciation that I receive from my patrons and the repeat orders are worth the sweat and perspirations.
The off-season gives me an opportunity to explore my creativity with new designs and to adopt newer technology. There are times when I do encounter set-backs like under-staffing, but tough times don’t last long!
