From a Small Interview to BBC Fame: The Journey of Kahani Wali Nani
A Conversation That Started It All
In 2017, a friend approached me, saying, “Tanya, my mum has started this initiative called Kahani Wali Nani. Would you be interested in featuring her on your website?”
“Of course!” I replied. “That’s exactly what The Lifestyle Portal is all about!”
Soon after, Kavita arranged a call with her mum, and I found myself immersed in a delightful conversation with Sarla Aunty.

A Grandmother’s Humble Beginnings
One of the first things Sarla Aunty said to me was, “Arey beta, why would you want to interview me? I’m just a grandmother who loves to tell stories. Kavita is so keen that you write about me.” I replied, “Sarla Aunty, trust us, your initiative needs to be shared with the world, and I’ll be the happiest to do this.”
And so, history was made. On June 21, 2017, I interviewed Sarla Aunty—Kahaniwali Nani, the storytelling grandma who was reviving the magic of stories. A huge thank you to her daughter, Kavita, who not only urged her mum to be interviewed but also worked alongside her to prepare for the interview and gather relevant pictures.

A Growing Circle of Stories
Sarla Aunty was full of praise for my write-up—it turned into a mutual admiration society! I joined her WhatsApp group and YouTube channel, where she narrated stories in Hindi and English. Personally, I adored the Hindi stories; they felt more connected and rooted in our Indian cultural heritage.
Her stories became a part of our home. I would often play them for my daughter during dinner (keeping us away from screentime) or while we lazed on the balcony, surrounded by our plants.

Recognition and Impact
Sarla Aunty would often call me with updates on her storytelling journey. One day, she excitedly said, “Tanya, guess what, beta, I got a call from BBC for an interview!” I was elated.
Her interview, “Telling Bedtime Stories to 10,000 Grandchildren,” was featured by the BBC in September 2017. She later told me, “Ever since you featured me on your website, I’ve been flooded with calls for collaboration.” Amazon India even reached out for a podcast opportunity.
Her journey of recognition was unstoppable—she was featured by SheThePeople (June 26, 2017), YourStory (September 15, 2017), The Hindu (August 19, 2017) Dainik Bhaskar, and The Better India (Hindi edition – December 22, 2020), a dedicated Wikipedia page and ScoopWhoop (August 24, 2017) among others.

A Thought That Stays With Me
I recall a saying from one of the army cantonments I visited with my father several years ago, and that has stayed with me ever since:
They may not need me,
They just might.
I’ll let my head be just in sight.
A smile as small as mine may precisely be their necessity.

The Lifestyle Portal: Stories That Matter
My vision for The Lifestyle Portal has always been simple—to share stories, people, and journeys that make a positive difference. No glamour, no gossip, just pure conversations that leave us feeling good, hopeful, and optimistic.
Launched in February 2011, The Lifestyle Portal is a small spec in the universe—no funding, no celebrity backing, no venture capital support. But the stories featured here are genuine, offering a spotlight to those who deserve recognition.
Although it may not be read by many, even one reader can make all the difference. If someone spots our work, however small the effort may seem, it has the power to create a meaningful impact.
Sarla Aunty’s story is a testament to how good intentions, combined with sincerity, can be a powerful force. When your heart is in the right place, you will meet the right people, and the journey will take you forward. As for The Lifestyle Portal, we continue to scout for heartwarming, solution-driven and positive stories to share with the world – as who knows, a story or a smile, may precisely be your necessity!
