In our latest W.I.N.G.S session, the children and I worked on a poster celebrating India/ Bharat in all its diversity and richness, with our people, our history, and our culture.

Here, children from grades 2 to 5 discussed and tried to understand the concept of ‘freedom’, and how it has two best friends – ‘responsibility’ and ‘respect’. If we separate ‘freedom’ from ‘responsibility’ and ‘respect’, ill-intentioned people will misuse freedom, and it will be lost for everyone.

We did some reflective exercises, and the outcome was brilliant.

We understood that freedom is precious, and to protect it, we must be responsible and respectful – towards our country, our surroundings, ourselves, our parents, our home, and our school.

Freedom’s Two Companions: Responsibility and Respect

Reflective writing is an excellent method for fostering positive reinforcement in decision-making and problem-solving. Starting reflective writing exercises with young minds helps them connect their learning to practical examples and real-life applications.

We first learnt what Freedom means. For my 2nd-grade student, Samayra, “Freedom means playing with friends.” For a 5th grader, Yuvanya, “Freedom means we can do all the things we want as long as we follow the rules.” 5th grader Laivish says, “Freedom means doing things safely while following the rules.” And following the rules means being ‘respectful’ and ‘responsible’.

And when we discussed what happens when we’re disrespectful and irresponsible with our freedom? Their answers were something like this: “When we hurt people by being unkind and breaking the rules, our freedom will be taken away. And of course, freedom means we cannot hurt anyone, because that would be disrespectful and irresponsible with our freedom.”

Asking the Right Questions: Building Responsible Citizens

Our Independence Day should be more than just a date; it has to remind us of our privileges and our duties.

Just questioning authorities isn’t enough; what are we doing as citizens to uphold our nation’s integrity? Let’s ask ourselves a few simple questions before blaming a municipal corporation of our city:

  • Are we littering the roads when we travel? Yes/ No/ Don’t care – answer Why for any option you choose.
  • Do we carry the wrappers back home and dispose them in dustbins? Yes/ No/ Don’t care – answer Why for any option you choose.

In our reflective exercise, we did not discuss heavy topics to understand the concept of freedom; we discussed it at its microcosm –

  • Do we have the freedom to go out and play? – Yes/ No/ Answer Why for any option you choose.
  • Do we take care of our belongings at home or school? – Yes/ No/ Answer Why for any option you choose.
  • Are we treating everyone fairly or nicely, not being rude? – Yes/ No/ Don’t care – Answer Why for any option you choose.

If you look closely, the first question stands for freedom, the second for responsibility, and the third for respect.

Whether we question our authorities, which we have the right to do, are we responsible and respectful at the same time?

With freedom come responsibilities and duties. How many of these responsibilities and duties have we fulfilled? These are questions we need to ask ourselves as well.

We discussed more; feel free to share your answers to the questions below:

  1. Why should we respect our Freedom?
  2. What happens if we misuse our Freedom?
  3. Does Freedom mean we can hurt anyone or say anything bad?
  4. What will happen if our Freedom is taken away from us?
  5. What can we do to protect our Freedom?

A Mentor’s Role in Shaping Responsible Young Minds

As a writing mentor and a creative thinking coach, I recognise that my effort is a drop in the ocean. Still, as my duty to my country, if I can instil respect and responsibility for our country through my mentorship, even in a handful of children, it would make me feel that the journey I embarked on to create a positive impact was worth it.

Our country gives us the freedom to raise our voice; sadly, in the name of ‘free speech’, we tend to do more harm than good. Adding fuel to the fire is social media, which blows things out of proportion with invalidated data and highly opinionated posts that are not always backed by sound data.

In one of my previous articles – Think Before You Post: A Guide to Responsible Social Media Use – I reiterate yet again that just because we have our freedom, it does not give us the license to be irresponsible and disrespectful of our nation, leaders, fellow citizens, our national heritage and integrity.

Each of us is a brand ambassador for our nation, and we should carry our country’s dignity with pride. We cannot strip our country of its dignity in front of the world.

That’s why on this Independence Day, I, in my own humble way, am trying to instil the seeds of responsibility and respect in young minds, as they will be the future leaders and citizens of our country.

If we cannot contribute in a big way, even a small, humble act done with the purest of intentions is more than enough.

Writing mentorships with a positive impact

If you think our education and learning should be more than just syllabus, marks, certificates and medals, our W.I.N.G.S (Grades 2+) and I.N.S.P.I.R.E (Grades 8+) writing mentorship programs at The Write Compass are just for your child. Our unique blend of writing and art, through mentorship, opens our minds to new opportunities and fosters a positive attitude toward learning and life.

Our lives are more than just the four walls of our classroom; they begin when we step beyond our home, school, and work into our country, which is also our home.

While we teach the concepts of freedom and independence and that our freedom fighters have fought selflessly for us, we must teach our present and future generations to respect and use our freedom responsibly. Our reflective writing ended with this: We can preserve our freedom and keep it safe with respect and responsibility.

Our Independence Day Pledge: A Promise to India/ Bharat

We made our poster and signed our pledge:

I promise to be kind and do what is right.
I promise to take care of my home, school, and country.
I promise to use my freedom wisely and never hurt anyone.
I promise to make India proud with my actions every day.

Jai Hind!
