Restaurant Review: Peking Tom, Mumbai

An answer to a perfect dining out experience is what Peking Tom all about. We had been to Peking Tom once a few years ago and had a simple chilli chicken and fried rice combination. But on a recent visit for a Saturday night dinner proved to be a memorable one at Peking Tom. We skipped the beer and wine being a Saturday night as the rules for drinking and driving in the city are quite strict.

So we started off with steamed chicken Dim Sums and Thai basil squids. Let me begin by describing how wonderfully delicious the Thai Basil Squids were. The squids were golden fried and tossed gently in basil. None of the flavours were over riding the other and it was a fantastic way to start your fine dining experience.

The steamed chicken Dim Sums were exquisite, served in an earthen pot. The dim sums were tied up into little potlis or bags which contained a generous filling of chicken mince. What added to the dish were the sweet chilli sauce and a dipping sauce that was served along with the dimsums. The last time I have tasted such good sweet chilli sauce or better Plum Chili Sauce was at a Chinese outlet in Bangkok, Thailand. I still cannot get the flavor out of my memory. There you could take as many sauces you liked from a large variety of sauce bowls and add it to the food that you’re having; so each time, you can get a new flavor of the food.

Peking Tom has an indoor and outdoor seating arrangement. We preferred the outdoors, as the crisp January evening breeze was adding to the ambience. There are mosquitoes, but the restaurant place mosquito coils to prevent them from disturbing the diners.

The staff is courteous and very enthusiastic that you try out something new. For the main course we tried Chicken in Thai Green Curry and Steamed Rice. This was after a very long time that I got to taste very good Thai Green Curry with the most succulent chicken pieces ever!

The prices are affordable which makes Peking Tom a total value for money restaurant. No wonder it is frequented so often with BPO employees who come in groups to dine! Go right ahead for a meal at Peking Tom, a meal for two should come to around Rs. 1,000/-.

There are plenty of other eateries around the area as they share the same space of a popular movie theatre – Movietime, so you will be spoilt with choices starting from Kareem’s, Northern Tadka and other lounge bars. Plenty of parking is available, so this makes an ideal place to head for a movie and dinner.
