Crafting Change: Truly Tribal’s Inspiring Journey to The Better India & The Logical Indian Recognition

We meet some of the most amazing and spirited people in the most unexpected ways. That’s precisely what happened when I shared a link for nominating entrepreneurs in an award ceremony on a WhatsApp group. Little did I know that this would lead me to a wonderful friendship with one of the most passionate champions of Indian handicrafts I’ve ever met.

Meeting Shweta Menon: The Birth of Truly Tribal Friendship

A few months later, at the award function, I was cheering for many of the entrepreneurs I had featured on my website, The Lifestyle Portal. A bright and effervescent lady was sitting right next to me, beaming with happiness and positivity. She was waiting for her name to be announced to receive an award in the category of Indian crafts and heritage.

We connected during the award ceremony, and I told her how I was here cheering for some of the entrepreneurs whom I had featured, who participated using the link I had shared on the Pune Sheroes WhatsApp group.

Shweta lit up with joy, “Oh my goodness, it was you!!” I was slightly taken aback; Shweta replied, “I have been wanting to know who shared that link in the group and thank the lady personally, and you’re sitting right beside me!” This lady was none other than Shweta Menon, the Founder of Truly Tribal.

And that’s how a whole new friendship between Shweta and me was born. I am a huge fan of Indian ethnic and handmade handicrafts, and as if the universe led me to Truly Tribal. My living room is now a mini Truly Tribal showroom, I joke with Shweta.

Crafting Through Crisis: Supporting Artisans During the Pandemic

When the pandemic struck, I saw how Shweta relentlessly worked hard to keep the boat afloat. She launched virtual art workshops where people like us could learn about our vast Indian heritage, culture, art, and craft—the fees we paid supported Indian artisans who were out of work during the pandemic.

Learning from Legends: Art Workshops That Changed Lives

Thanks to Shweta’s initiative, I rediscovered my love for art. I explored Madhubani, Gond, Phad, Pattachitra, and more.

I am honoured to have learnt some of the finest Indian ethnic artwork from artists such as:

  • Remant Kumar Mishra – Mithila / Madhubani artist
  • Vijay Joshi – Phad & Miniature artist
  • Apindra Swain – Pattachitra artist

With each art workshop came stories about Indian history, culture, and way of life. It was one of the best learning experiences, even though we were in the midst of a lockdown during the pandemic.

Giving Back and Growing Together

I am so happy that we were among the first to write about Truly Tribal and their initiatives to support our Indian artisans in need through empowering programs in January 2020. Truly Tribal collaborates with National Award-winning Indian artisans, and she did not abandon them during the pandemic; instead, she worked tirelessly to provide them with opportunities to teach, mentor, guide, and earn a living.

I learnt some of the best Indian arts online by watching the artisan sitting in his home in a village, teaching from his mobile phone. What could be more humbling and empowering at the same time? It reminded me that heritage lives in the hands of those who preserve it.

Recognition That Matters: Truly Tribal on The Better India & The Logical Indian

Today, when I see her being featured on The Better India, my heart is filled with pride and joy for Shweta. We still connect every now and then, sharing a few bits of gyan, sprinkled with motivation. I had the good fortune to guide her brilliant daughter, Arya, as a Writing Mentor during the pandemic.

We’ve supported each other in many ways – through collaborations professionally and as friends. I think when your intentions are strong, the universe does send you the right kind of people to help you along the way.

Seeing Shweta’s hard work recognised by The Better India makes us believe that hard work, sincerity, and most importantly, good intentions always shine through. In a world that often rushes past its roots, Truly Tribal reminds us to pause, learn, and honour the hands that shape our culture.
