‘Three Patriots’ – by Roger Dragonette

Three generations of a proud Indian family

A mother, a daughter and a granddaughter

The heart brims over with joy and delight

And an appreciation of the determination

That little Nyla barged into the world with

But, behind it all a trace of trepidation

As a new political dispensation

Takes the reins of a nation hurtling towards

A precipice or a pinnacle

Will they hold it against us that we are Hindustani, but not Hindu?

Will it count for nothing that we defended India?

That we worked industriously and with all out heart

To keep the lifelines of the nation flowing?

I may be westernised, but I turned my back

On the West when it was ready to embrace me

Because I love my India!

They were clever in playing

The eighty per cent card at the hustings

And reaped the rewards

But, hopefully, the reality of

Twenty per cent of over a billion

Cannot be wished away

Nor can the Constitution that protects that twenty per cent

Jai Hind, say all proud Indians…including The Anglo-Indian, the Goan, the Muslim and the Christian
